Countless tales of celebrities breaking the law and escaping significant legal recourse flood the tabloids. Too often, celebrities are caught in possession of drugs or driving while under the influence. Sympathetic frequently judges hand down mild sentences, even in the event of second and third offenses.
Community service is often the punishment for the original offense or failure to abide by the specific regulations of probation. In a roundabout way, community service often bolsters a celebrity’s image. The public is fast to forget a celebrity got behind the wheel after drinking upon becoming privy to photographs depicting said celeb reading to underprivileged children or manning a food station at a soup kitchen.
Social status does not lessen the severity of a crime. Upon reviewing many sentences handed down in Hollywood, one may suspect California makes an unspoken exception to the rule.
